Truly overjoyed that over 270 of my family, friends, relatives, community friends, social media friends took time to greet me for my 7 decades’ birthday, with not just their heartfelt greetings, but also accompanied with photos and aspirations for sustained good health.

My wish is just good health to sustain in a steadfast way all the pilgrimages I want to do. Hope to see most of you in Disney Hall for August 20 concert of Jose Mari Chan with FASO, a treat from my musician-making friends, now family in a more meaningful way since the pandemic.

And on August 28, Sunday see you and the Filipino-American community attending

#M4D in Disney Hall, for Martin Nievera, dubbed the Concert King, yet so humble and so unnerving that his radical listening skills enabled him to recall every word of my interview questions.

I theorize that musicians are not just brainy folks for remembering different songs and different keys of music, but they are emotionally wholesome and spiritually centered and connected to the Universe and our God to be able to do flawless, perfect pitch performances.
See you all in Disney Hall!

I have always theorized that folks who give to others are generally happy and content folks. Why? Their minds and hearts are preoccupied with how else might they give to others and strategically benefit our Filipino American and Asian American communities.
I am fortunate to have a long-term friendship with Ted Benito, an only son raised by his parents with so much nurturing love and a big heart that keeps giving to others in the community. I have watched him evolve from his days of being involved in script writing and performing at UCLA’s Pilipino Cultural Nights to directing fundraising events for the Filipino American Library under then board chair Fritz Friedman to producing events like Jazzipino, Jazzmopolitan at Aratani and Ford Amphitheater to plays at the Ford Amphitheater to a 13,000 strong audience attending at the Hollywood Bowl, to watch Apl.de.ap and various singers here and in the Philippines. We still remember that wonderful picnic of twelve of us, that included music aficionados and our spiritual mentor Fr. Rodel G.Balagtas and our good friends then, plus John C. Davis, now in heaven watching over us.

Excerpt of Ted’s story is posted here, the entire 10 pages-story can be obtained at Even The Rainbow Has A Body available at Philippine Expressions Bookshop and East West Bookshop.

We are fortunate that Ted Benito’s leadership to produce events have strategically uplifted our artists as more than deserving to perform in mainstream venues, from UCLA, to Aratani, to Ford, to Hollywood Bowl and now Disney Hall.
The next beneficiary of Ted’s cultural vision is Martin Nievera, a 40 years’ world-class performing artist, born in Hawaii, and currently resides in the Philippines, who will be performing at the world-acclaimed Walt Disney Hall’s Music Center.
Martin has performed in many mainstream stages around the world, but he will be the first male Filipino artist who will be performing in Disney Hall on August 28. Imagine that history is about to be made. The first female artist to perform at Walt Disney Hall, sponsored by Search to Involve Pilipino Americans was our world class singer Lea Salonga, decades ago.

Best part is 10% of the proceeds will be donated to SIPA, PEDRO, Apl.de.ap International and Incarnation Church in Glendale headed by Fr. Rodel G.Balagtas.
We are meant to sing and with excellence, we will be heard widely and broadly. #loveandkindnesshasmultipliereffect

I was leisurely reading the New Yorker Magazine, as I was feeling under the weather, from 96F weather. I was looking forward to be at my handsome godson’s birthday, but I could not.
Feeling down, I was lifted up upon reading ‘The Pyramid of Sound’ by Alex Ross in New Yorker, April 18, 2022 about the L.A. Master Chorale and its conductor Grant Gershon, a masterful genius and an inclusive conductor.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Nilo Alcala mentioned, but not really as I witnessed his talents unfolding from a church choir, to stages of ABS-CBN as back up singers to celebrities, to his Disney Hall composed music sung by LA Master Chorale.

Nilo engaged in extensive research and conducted interviews with Master (Guru) Danongan “Danny” Kalanduyan – a legendary kulintang artist and National Endowment for the Arts awardee. After four interviews and intense studying of reading materials and CD’s with kulintang repertoires provided by the Guru, Nilo conceived Manga Pakalagian.
“The piece drew from the kulintang aesthetic of having multi-layers of rhythmic motifs that serve various functions — as main melodic rhythm, middle ground rhythm [and] background rhythm. As traditional kulintang ‘rules’ of playing give leeway to improvisation, so do segments of this choral work to the kulintang player,” Nilo explained.
If you want to read more, get my book, Even The Rainbow Has A Body from Philippine Expressions Bookshop or East West Bookshop in Berkeley.

And, wanting to read more, I remembered I wrote about Nilo Alcala eight pages about him in 2016 in my book, ‘Even The Rainbow Has A Body’, edited by Nickee de Leon-Huld Nikasha Huld, and a foreword by Christina Oriel.
I am buoyed that my fellow Filipinos are visibly seen now in mainstream venues. I am excerpting a few pages here. Vibrant photo taken by Hydee Pichai, formerly Hydee Ursolino.
August 28, 2022 is when Martin Nievera will celebrate 40 years of performing world-class, audience-integrative music performance at the acoustics-superior sounding Walt Disney Hall Concert.

While dubbed as the Concert King, he was so humble in sharing his deemed “lack of presence’ in his treasured children’s milestones while they were growing up. Any musician who is a world class performer will speak to that ‘perceived lack,’ that even facetime technology couldn’t fill. Martin spoke of that reality in his 4 decades of music performance. It had him teary-eyed, as this writer, “but you are doing that now,” reassuring him that his art took away from his personal life, yet his music keeps many folks alive and warm hearted.

Many were singing with him in the audience as he sang his favorite song:”Say that you love me,” which even his mom wrote a chorus for, in Spanish.
I was astounded by how I felt so connected, crying with him, as he spoke of the special treasures in his life: his father whose footsteps he wanted to follow, singing onstage, his sons Ram, Robin and Santino. He spoke respectfully of these three young men, who are finding their own creative spaces for their respective gifts and talents. We are in for a surprise come August 28.
It will be his 40 years of performing music, that while the pandemic stalled creativity in folks, it catalyzed Martin Nievera to write more songs and give more to others.
Disney Hall will be a fitting venue for this very kind artist who takes any gig as an important gig, singing at a crab house restaurant in Las Vegas to raise funds for the medical expenses for a needy person. Every life matters to Martin, as 70 children who needed heart surgeries and were benefited by another concert he did in the Philippines just recently.
I knew that his warm, open heart that welcomed us all to be in his orbit might have been nurtured by his own generosity of Spirit to others in need. But it is also his heart which magnetizes the “team” of volunteers, who want to share their resources to give him the best respectable venue.
Amongst his producers is our Community’s nurtured impresario, Ted Israel Benito, whose impeccable people skills plus masterful professionalism has earned him more than respectability, but also visibility for our Asian American community to have artists perform at distinguished mainstream venues: Aratani Theater, Ford Amphitheater, Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Hall in Los Angeles.
I couldn’t help but give a shout out after Ruben Nepales brought up this coming August 5 is #goldopen weekend for Jokoy, ushering more visibility for Filipinos.
Martin Nievera was introduced to Jokoy at the Hollywood Bowl by Ted Benito. Martin shared that Jokoy was then promoting his shows, by passing out CDs. Those were the conscientious efforts of our artists then to keep piercing the invisibility veil, as others did too.
Martin Nievera shared his own efforts of putting the Philippines on the map, “not knowing what I was doing, but kept going on talk shows like Jay Leno,” and performing in several stages.
Two journalists who did that for the Filipinos in Hollywood are Ruben and Janet Susan R. Nepales, two officers of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who also gave visibility to being Filipino performing artists in the US.
I suppose this is the privilege of being in the US for over forty years, witnessing the collective, strategic goodness that folks have been doing in building communities.
All these efforts seem to be coalescing as qualitatively luminous and highly visible.
Other presenting producers are Rosie Chua and Jom Jimenez of Spa De Med Beverly Hills of the Geoffrey Jimenez group of companies.

But equally outstanding is this #M4D 40th anniversary concert of Martin Nievera will share 10% of its proceeds to 4 non-profits: Incarnation Church in Glendale, JIR Foundation, Search to Involve Pilipino Americans, Philippine Emergency Disaster Relief Foundation and Apl.de.Ap Foundation International.
Martin Nievera’s 40th anniversary is his story, but it is also our story as Asian Americans who are performing at levels of masterful excellence, with a big heart of including all, because we know what it is like to be invisible. It is about our story of giving, a sterling heart, pure of generosity of spirit to keep others alive.
Martin concluded that he himself has not felt any discomfort of discrimination in 4 decades, and he is just grateful for all the opportunities he has been given, and someone who is proud of being a Filipino – joyful, grateful, giving and who keeps moving forward.
Bottomline – his aloha spirit makes Martin so handsome to this writer, who in a few days, turns 70yo and in a few months, will celebrate her 44 years of marriage.
